OTT and BSS/OSS platform integration – the next step in value-added service deployment

Posted by Jennifer Shin on Oct 4, 2016 9:07:00 AM

Over-the-top (OTT) services are rapidly growing in popularity, enabling mobile subscribers to take advantage of a variety of value-added services over their mobile service providers’ networks. In fact, the mobile industry has been predicted to lose $182 billion in voice and messaging revenue between 2013 and 2017 because of the growing use of OTT messaging. While some MVNOs may see OTT services as a threat, the truth is partnering offers a win-win solution for both parties. The key for MVNOs may be a highly-flexible BSS/OSS platform that enables quick-and-easy OTT integration through open APIs.

The convergence of BSS and OSS

Posted by Jennifer Shin on Sep 27, 2016 9:05:00 AM

There was a time when BSS and OSS were virtually siloed platforms, with little integration and even less interest from either party in the other. Times have changed, and the increasingly complex mix of mobile products and services made possible by improved networks have fostered the convergence of both platforms. What’s happened?

Part 1: Why the cloud is a great place for your BSS/OSS

Posted by Jennifer Shin on Jul 20, 2016 9:00:00 AM

Given the speed with which the mobile industry is evolving, it would make perfect sense for new MVNOs to lean toward cloud-based and SaaS BSS/OSS solutions. But some traditions die hard and there are those who might still see something as fundamental and foundational as a BSS/OSS platform as a premises-based system. So what exactly are the benefits to a cloud-based BSS/OSS solution?

The future of BSS-OSS technology-Four areas of innovationAs the mobile industry evolves, it’s important that BSS/OSS technology keeps pace with it. As MVNOs have been able to focus more on the subscriber experience and less on infrastructure improvements, service quality, business agility, market share, and profitability have become increasingly important KPIs for effective decision-making.

BSS and OSS: What are they and where is the technology headed?

Posted by Jennifer Shin on Nov 18, 2015 8:30:00 AM

The rising demand for convergent billing services, enhanced CEM, and the general growth of the mobile market worldwide is driving next-generation BSS/OSS technology. But what exactly makes up BSS and OSS?

Simply put, business support systems, or BSS, is the software and processes necessary for what is commonly called the “back office” to function. This is the part of a mobile service provider responsible for ensuring that the business functions properly and is profitable. For an MVNO, BSS functionality includes such tasks as managing rating, orders, products, billing, fraud, and customer relations, as well as providing revenue assurance and business intelligence. In short, it’s everything that faces the customer.

Operation support systems, or OSS, on the other hand, is everything network-oriented – network design, configuration, and monitoring; fault management; infrastructure security; and service fulfillment, quality, and assurance. With the rapid growth of mobile data service being driven by 4G LTE technology, OSS these days is all about ensuring service quality, reliability, and assurance.

Accelerating new MVNO service introductions

Posted by Jennifer Shin on Nov 12, 2015 9:00:00 AM

MVNO success and growth can be significantly impacted by the speed with which new services are introduced. A modular IT infrastructure and the right BSS/OSS platform on which to implement it are crucial. It can mean the difference between struggling to reinvent the wheel with every product or package introduction, or jumpstarting the process with a system that enables you to modify and repackage existing offerings quickly and easily to avoid missing market opportunities.
