Why you want to be a full MVNO

If you’re thinking of becoming a no-frills mobile service provider – or are already one -- you may find it tough to expand your opportunities and fatten your margins. It’s time to consider moving up the value chain to a full mobile virtual network operator (MVNO).

Sure, it’s no secret that no-frills MVNOs originally changed the mobile landscape and the low entry barrier made it easy for just about anyone to launch a mobile service provider. But as more and more discount MVNOs piled into crowded markets, competition got fiercer and prices got tighter. In many cases, struggling discounters got swept up by larger, better-funded MNOs. To make matters even more challenging discounters rely heavily upon the mobile network operator (MNO) to supply virtually all of the technology, network, and operational functionality. That makes it even harder for the discount service provider to switch MNO partners and move their subscribers to a more cost-efficient environment. No change, no gain.

Why MNOs are finding lots to love about MVNEs?

It can be expensive and tedious to enter new mobile markets, even for the bigger MNOs. That’s why they’re increasingly eager to play nice with MVNOs – they see them as a faster, easier, and more cost-efficient way to gain entrance to remote or niche markets that the mobile network operator might not normally be able to access or service effectively on their own.

However, MVNOs come in all sizes, shapes, and colors and some create more headaches than they’re worth when they don’t have the experienced staff, level of technological sophistication, and depth of resources necessary to integrate well with a national-level mobile network operator (MNO).

Enter the mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE).

With Valentine’s Day on many people’s minds, this might be a good time to continue talking about relationships, which I started in my previous post, only this time it’s the relationship between an MVNO and an MVNE (that’s us). After all, behind most successful MVNOs stands an MVNE lending a helping hand.

What makes this kind of relationship so valuable is the ability of an MVNE, or mobile virtual network enabler, to take away many of the pains associated with back office and front-end operational activities through a comprehensive, turn-keyBSS/OSS platform built specifically for mobile. This is especially valuable for a postpaid MVNO/MVNE relationship because of the BSS/OSS complexity involved deploying a postpaid customer management platform that can include managing provisioning, mediation, rating, customer care, billing, and other back-office services.
